Struggling with Internet Access at Home

With the recent social distancing restrictions, a large number of people are working from home. You may start to notice problems with your internet. The more people that are using the internet the larger problems you will have. If you cannot get onto your internet at all, but your phone internet still works. You will have the option to tether your phone via the hotspot. Below are the steps for the two types of phones, android or Apple.

Android

  1. Turn on the WIFI hotspot by going to Settings and tap Connections.
  2. Scroll down and tap Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
  3. On the next screen, tap the switch to the right of Mobile Hotspot to toggle it on.
  4. If the switch is disabled, you need to turn off Data Saver to enable it. To do this, go back to the Connections screen and tap Data Usage.
  5. Next, tap Data Saver and toggle the switch to turn it off if it’s on.
  6. Once again, tap Mobile Hotspot and Tethering and then go to the Mobile Hotspot switch to on. Your phone is now a wireless access point, and you’ll get a notification when the feature is activated.
  7. You can now connect your computer as you would any other WIFI router to your Android phone’s hotspot. Tap the Mobile Hotspot notification to get the hotspot name and view the password.
  8. Enter your Phones hotspot password. You’ll find this password next to the “Wi-Fi Password” heading in the middle of the Personal Hotspot page on your iPhone.
  9. Click Next (Windows) or Join (Mac). As long as the password is correct, doing so will prompt your computer to connect to your iPhone’s hotspot.

Apple

  1. Open your iPhone’s Settings It’s a grey app with gears on it that you’ll likely find on the Home Screen.
  2. Tap Personal Hotspot. It’s near the top of the Settings page, just below the Cellular (or Mobile Data) option.
  3. Slide Personal Hotspot right to the “On” position. This switch will change from “Off” to “On”. Your iPhone’s wireless hotspot should now be on.
    1. Tap Wi-Fi Password to change the password for your iPhone’s hotspot.
  4. Click your computer’s Wi-Fi icon. It’s a series of curved lines in the bottom-right side of the screen (Windows) or the top-right side of the screen (Mac).
  5. Click your iPhone’s name. You’ll see your iPhone’s name appear in the Wi-Fi pop-up window. On a Windows computer, click Connect in the bottom-right corner of the Wi-Fi pop-up window to continue.
  6. Enter your iPhone’s hotspot password. You’ll find this password next to the “Wi-Fi Password” heading in the middle of the Personal Hotspot page on your iPhone.
  7. Click Next (Windows) or Join (Mac). As long as the password is correct, doing so will prompt your computer to connect to your iPhone’s hotspot.
